Whether she is recalling such lost friends as Coretta Scott King and Ossie Davis, extolling honesty, decrying vulgarity, explaining why becoming a Christian is a "lifelong endeavor," or simply singing the praises of a meal of red rice-Maya Angelou writes from the heart to millions of women she considers her extended family. ![]() Here in short spellbinding essays are glimpses of the tumultuous life that led Angelou to an exalted place in American letters and taught her lessons in compassion and fortitude: how she was brought up by her indomitable grandmother in segregated Arkansas, taken in at thirteen by her more worldly and less religious mother, and grew to be an awkward, six-foot-tall teenager whose first experience of loveless sex paradoxically left her with her greatest gift, a son. Dedicated to the daughter she never had but sees all around her, Letter to My Daughter transcends genres and categories: guidebook, memoir, poetry, and pure delight. Suddenly, we encounter Jim speaking at the official Inquiry, which is attempting to gather facts about the event. ![]() The reader is given no reason for the vibration and the eventual conclusion of the incident. One night, as the ship sails quietly through the Arabian sea, the crew, including Jim, feels a strange vibration disturb the underbelly of the ship. ![]() ![]() There are five white men on board, as crew, and the voyage is led by a fat, crazy, German captain. Then, after a long injury and hospital stay, instead of deciding to return to England, Jim accepts the position of chief mate of the Patna, an old local steamship carrying 800 Muslim pilgrims to Mecca. The story then cuts to an early incident where Jim lost an opportunity to prove his mettle: he "leapt" too late, missing his chance. With his youthful, romantic aspirations for the sea, he is physically powerful he has "Ability in the abstract." He roams the Asian south seas as a water-clerk, moving from place to place, always trying to outrun, it seems, a particular fact of his past. This was the boy I loved to hate, but I also knew that there were many layers to him-that he was more than just the bully tormenting the girl he once loved. With how cruel Jace tended to be towards Dylan, I seriously begged that he have some redeeming factor before long or else. These two share a great deal of history with each other, and while there was so much good, the lingering and lasting memory is the last one-that of Dylan abandoning Jace, or at least, that's how he saw it. When she see Jace again, he's nothing like the boy she remembers. Living with her aunt and uncle, she's back to finish her senior year in Royal Manor High. ![]() Then, Dylan leaves Jace behind, with four years passing before she returns. Theirs was a bond that nothing and no one could ever break, and it seemed like they were meant for so much more than "just" friendship. Once upon a time, Jace Covington was Dylan Taylor's best friend. ![]() ![]() I also learned through the course of the novel that I can't outright condemn Becky Sharp. ![]() If we care to, we can learn to become better parents, better husbands, better wives, and better friends. ![]() This voice of reason grounds us makes us understand the joy, the pain, the happiness, and the sorrow that accompanies each of us in our journey through life. Vanity Fair is with us, all around us and many times we never fully understand the roles that the players play. It seemed that at every opportune moment, the narrator took a step back and informed us, the reader, of some nugget, some little moral, that placed the actions of the participants in the Fair in context. To me, the narrator's voice in the novel was most amazing. It is her methods that vary from what you and I might use or do they? She can't help it, and nor should she is she really any different than any of us? No, she's not. No, Miss Rebecca Sharp sprang from the womb enlivened with her desire to claw her way to the top.
